In 2024, an installation for scrap handling was delivered to the most important steel group located in Asturias.
The installation consists of a fixed suspension beam with two rectangular electromagnets with dimensions of 1750 x 1600 mm, specially designed for scrap handling.
This state-of-the-art electrical power and control equipment has a magnetization current boost system, in order to further improve the magnet’s load capacity. Likewise, the electrical equipment supplies the magnet at a constant intensity, which allows maintaining the same level of force during all working hours.
In addition, it incorporates a continuous control system of all the installation variables, which allows knowing at all times levels of overvoltage, overcurrent, magnet temperature, among others, to guarantee the condition and availability of the entire installation.
This type of electromagnet has a high load capacity, up to three times greater than circular electromagnets of a similar section, improving the efficiency of the installation. Its shape allows access to rectangular containers, in which electromagnets are necessary to separate low-density metals.
The improvement in the capacity of the electromagnet is due to the fact that the raised material is attracted by an external pole without the creation of the “inverted cone” shape, allowing the elevation and separation of a greater amount of material, since it adheres around the perimeter.
This type of electromagnet, although it can be energized traditionally by any 220 V source, uses special electrical equipment to maintain its high quality and efficiency standards.
